BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's football team saw the offense go to multiple players in scoring seven touchdowns in a 42-12 victory over the defense.
The two teams played 118 plays in the modified scoring game that awards the defense one point for each drive stop, three points for forcing a turnover and six for scoring. The offense scores in the traditional fashion but has three plays to move the ball 10 yards, rather than four, until they are inside the defense's 40. At that point, the offense has four downs to move the chains.
Senior quarterback Rusty Smith began the scrimmage under center. Alternating from last week's script when the defense had to stay on the field for approximately the first 20 plays without a substitution, this week the first string offense played the first 11 plays. In that time, Smith was 4-7 with no interceptions and scored on the 11th play connecting with Jamari Grant for a 12 yard score to take a 6-1 advantage before giving way to Jeff VanCamp. VanCamp was 6-13 on the day, gave no gifts and recorded 77 yards.
Graham Wilbert was next to direct plays under center. Wilbert started with the ball spotted on the offensive 20 rather than the 40 as VanCamp on his next series. On the day Wilbert was 7-19 with no interceptions and 70 yards. The two teams went into the half with 41 plays complete and the score tied at six.
Smith returned from the intermission and ran the next eight plays only to see the defense take the 7-6 advantage. He would connect with Rob Housler six plays later to score and begin the destruction of the defense that would only stop the offense five more times for their 12 point final.
The four quarterbacks, including David Kooi who was 1-6-0 for 8 yards, would go to 14 different receivers. Tight end Rob Housler was the high man on the day with 32 yards, including a 15 yard score. Cortez Gent equaled Housler with 32 yards, but did not score. Amos Wood, Jr had 31 yards and also didn't score. Scoring was left to Jamari Grant who had 31 yards and Housler.
The ground game was just as diverse with 12 players carrying the ball. Avionne Rolle had 10 carries for 95 yards, including a 60 yard score. Receiver Chris Bonner carried the ball once, on a reverse, and also had a 60 yard score. Alfred Morris, the hero of last week's game had 67 yard on nine carries, Michael Barasch made his 2009 scrimmage debut with seven carries for 49 yards and a 20-yard TD. David Muniz had 67 yard on eight carries, including a four-yard score. Offensive lineman, Ed Wertepny also added to the scoring with a fumble recovery and score from nine yards out.
