BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic women's basketball team defeated Webber International 93-61 on Friday night at FAU Arena. The Owls (1-0) were led on offense by Lyrell Barfield and Andrea Taylor who both scored 15 points in the game. Taylor had the hot hand from behind-the-arch as she tied her career-high for three-pointers in a game with five. The senior went five-of-six from behind-the-arc in the game. Barfield also made four three-pointers in victory.
"I got myself straightened out," said Taylor. "I've been working on my three-point shot all off-season and it paid off."
The Owls also broke a team record for three-pointers in the game with 14 total. The previous high for three-pointers made in a game was 12 back on Feb. 2, 2008 against Louisiana-Lafayette. The victory also gave FAU its first season-opening victory since the 1998-99 season, when the Owls knocked off Bethune-Cookman 90-58.
The Owls also played a strong defensive game as they forced 21 Webber turnovers and scored 25 fast-break points. The Owls also out-rebounded Webber 48-32.
The Warriors (0-3) were led on offense by Chelsea Shipman who scored 17 points and went 6-of-9 from the field. Nikki King also had a strong game for Webber as the junior approached double-double status with 11 points and eight rebounds.
FAU will hit the road tomorrow and take on No. 24 Iowa State on Sunday afternoon in Ames. The game can be heard at www.fausports.com with tip-off scheduled for 2 pm.
