The Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team got to see where it stood by opening its season at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional at the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga. over the last three days.
Each of the four players that the Owls sent to the regional picked up a victory in singles action.
Sophomore Daniel Vardag dropped a second round match in the singles draw to the University of Miami's Carl Sundberg, the tournament's number eight seed. He fell in a hard-fought tiebreaker in the second set.
"Daniel continues to improve this fall," said Head Coach Brandon Stokes. "His preparation and positive habits are building his confidence. He is getting closer to where he needs to be to lead this team and to be recognized among the elite college players in our region and nation."
Freshman Georg Matschke lost in Saturday's second round in straight sets to Miami's Waylon Chin. He concluded the tournament with a 1-2 mark and won a first round match after losing in Thursday's qualifying round.
Stokes likes what he saw from the talented freshman in his first collegiate event as an Owl.
"Georg loves to compete. His confidence and passion for the game are contagious," said Stokes. "We know the progress he must make and Georg is eager and excited to return home and hone his skills."
Juniors Marc Abdelnour and Lawrence Harradine returned to the win column in Saturday's consolation bracket after falling in Friday's first round. Abdelnour dropped only two games in an impressive 6-1, 6-1 victory over Miami's Barnabas Carrega. Harradine also won in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) over Florida State University's Owen Long.
"As a team, we are making progress towards our goals," noted Stokes. "We have several more tournament opportunities this fall season to demonstrate our confidence in pressure situations."
