BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic women's basketball team wrapped up their final preseason workout on Friday afternoon, paving the way to the official opening of practice on Saturday. During Friday's workout, the Lady Owls hit the court for a three-hour session that included defensive drills and conditioning.
"We are a long way from where we need to be, but I think we've got the pieces in place that will get us there," said head coach Chancellor Dugan after FAU's Friday workout. "We've got to get a lot tougher and develop a sense of urgency and purpose every time we step on the floor. I think that we'll get there, this group works hard, they want it, but we have just got to show them the way."
The Lady Owls finished with a 12-17 record during the 2008-09 campaign and were knocked out of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in the 1st round after a 67-61 loss to New Orleans at home.
"We need to come out tomorrow and the next day and just get better," said senior point guard Brittany Bowe. "Right now we have a lot to work on but it's a good thing to work on it here in October instead of March. Our goal is to improve as a team every day."
Bowe is joined by a flock of seniors, seven in total, that have high aspirations for the 2009-10 season. Among those seniors returning will be FAU's leading scorer (Carla Stubbs - 11.7 PPG) and leading rebounder (Jessica Knurick - 6.6 RPG). Bowe also was a big contributor last season as the Ocala, FL native led the team in assists per game (3.7) and steals per game (2.1).
"We are very excited to get back out there," said Knurick. "This is what we go through months of preseason for. "We just need to go drill by drill work as hard as we can to make eachother better."
FAU will continue practice on Saturday as they continue to prepare for the season opener at home on November 13 against Webber International.
