BOCA RATON, FL - Anhnhi Tran's second goal of the year lifted Florida Atlantic past Indiana State 1-0 Friday night at FAU Field.
Tran, a sophomore from Ottawa, Ontario, headed in a well-placed cross from senior teammate, and fellow Canadian, Natalie D'Oria in the 23rd minute.
Florida Atlantic (1-1), a team which led the nation in 2006 with 16 shutouts in 21 games and posted nine shutouts in 2007, kept the Sycamores off the scoreboard for the entire 90 minutes to pick up its first win of 2008.
"Defensively we were able to limit their opportunities," said FAU head coach Brian Dooley. "They really applied some counter pressure in the second half and we will have to do a better job responding to that as we move into conference play."
Indiana State (1-2) came ever-so-close to evening the match midway through the second half when Natasia San Carter's shot from 20 yards out ricocheted off the top post. However it was one of just four shots for the Sycamores, compared to FAU's ten.
Owls' sophomore Janelle Blake totaled a career-high four shots and redshirt freshman forward Danielle Stolt put two on goal.
"We have to make some adjustments on our end because Miami is a very dangerous team," said Dooley, looking ahead to Sunday's match at UM.
The Owls travel to Coral Gables to play the University of Miami Sunday afternoon. Kick-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
