One week before the Florida Atlantic University football team heads to Austin to face the University of Texas, the Owls held their final scrimmage of the season behind the Tom Oxley Athletic Center. The third scrimmage was a situational scrimmage, a chance for the Owls to run a full dress rehearsal before the August 30 game against the Longhorns.
The situational scrimmage was a scripted game situation. The offense and defense rehearsed short-yardage, long-yardage, all downs, goal line and red zone situations. The special teams also got its most extensive training session of the preseason as punting, kicking and kickoff situations were also rehearsed. Among the highlights, in the first half, The Owls performed well on first and second down in the red zone. Rusty Smith found Lester Jean cutting for the corner of the end zone in time for a touchdown. The very next play, Smith searched and threw to Jamari Grant who made a one-handed circus catch for another score.
On defense the second team defensive line, led by Jamere Johnson and Dino Cox, were able to get pressures on both the second and third string quarterbacks.
On special teams, DiIvory Edgecomb broke for a couple of long returns, including one on the opening kickoff of the scrimmage. Also, Austin Jensen came right up the middle to block a punt, picked up a true hop in the recovery and took it the distance for a touchdown.
