BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University (34-22, 16-6 Sun Belt) softball team fought off a pesky Middle Tennessee State squad to complete a three-game sweep on Sunday.
Like it had in both of Saturday's games, FAU was able to score big in the first inning on Sunday. The Owls tallied four runs in the first inning, with two coming on an RBI single by Blair Bodenmiller. MTSU (20-28, 9-11) answered with a run in the second before FAU put up two more runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-1 lead.
Two Blue Raider solo homeruns cut the FAU lead to 6-3 in top of the third and MTSU had the bases loaded with one out before Amber Barton was able to strike out the next two batters to end the threat.
Becky Brandies hit a two-run homerun in the home half of the third before to help the Owls regain momentum and take an 8-3 lead. MTSU had the bases loaded in both the fourth and fifth innings, but could only manage one run in each frame.
Rose Gressley relived Barton in the sixth and allowed just two hits and one run in two innings for her first career save.
The Owls will travel to Miami, FL on Friday to play rival Florida International in the second game of their three-game series. The game starts at 7 p.m. and live play-by-play will be available at fausports.com.
