BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University (33-22, 15-6 Sun Belt) softball team swept both games of a doubleheader from Middle Tennessee on Saturday.
FAU scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning, including one on an RBI single by Lauren Crandall. Two more runs came in the fifth inning, with another Crandall RBI. This time it was a triple to right center that drove in Rose Gressley.
The Owls led 5-0 in the sixth inning when MTSU scored four runs, helped by three Owl errors to pull within one run. However, they were unable to score again and FAU held on for the victory.
Amber Barton went the distance for her 18th win of the season.
MTSU (20-27, 9-10) threatened in the top of the first inning of Game 2 with the bases loaded and none out, before an unconventional double play came about. Ashlyn Parmeter threw home on a grounder to forceout the lead runner. That same runner was called out for interfering with Brittany Walker as she tried to throw to first and gave MTSU runners on first and second with two out. A walk loaded the bases a second time before Blair Bodenmiller made a leaping grab to end the inning.
The Owls were able to push across three runs in their half of the first inning, with two runs coming on another Crandall triple. Amber Jones doubled in Amy Bukovich in the bottom of the fourth inning to give FAU a 4-0 lead. The Blue Raiders mounted another rally in the seventh inning. The first two batters of the inning reached and Ashley Cline singled to right field, but Caitlin McLure was thrown out while trying to score from second. Blair Bodenmiller made another snare of a liner for the second out. Corrie Abel walked before Brittney Banania grounded to Parmerter to end the game.
FAU and MTSU meet tomorrow in the final game of their three-game set. The game will start at 1 p.m.
