PALM SPRINGS, CA - Rose Gressley threw a complete game four hitter as the Florida Atlantic softball team defeated no. 6 Louisiana State 3-0 at the Palm Springs Classic.
FAU (5-6) drew first blood in the top of the third inning when three consecutive hits drove in two runs to give the Owls a 2-0 lead. A Lauren Crandall solo homerun to right field in the top of the fourth gave FAU a 3-0 lead.
LSU was able to make solid contact several times on Gressley but often hit the ball right at Owl defenders. The Tigers' had a scoring threat in the bottom of the fifth with runners on first and second and one out when Gressley was able to secure an inning ending double play to get out of danger. LSU mounted another scoring threat in the bottom of the seventh when they had runners on second and third with two out but a grounder to Blair Bodenmiller ended the game.
The Owls defeated a ranked opponent for the first time in three tries this season after falling to then-no. 12 ranked Michigan 5-2 in the Kick-Off Classic and falling to no. 12 Stanford in Thursday night's game at the Palm Springs Classic. Both defeats came in extra innings.
Action for FAU continues at 11 p.m. eastern when they face no. 11 Hawaii. Live stats will be available via GameTracker at fausports.com.
