The Florida Atlantic University track team will take part in the Sun Belt Outdoor Championships in Lafayette, LA this weekend.
The Owls finished 8th at the Sun Belt Indoor Championships in February and will be looking to exceed that performance at this meet. Friederike Feil won the 3,000 meter and mile event titles at Sun Belt Indoors. Head Track Coach Alex Smolka has confidence that the freshman will perform well, but realizes that she has lost the element of surprise.
"(Leading up to) indoors, (none of the other Sun Belt teams) really knew that much about her, but now they know of her, so we'll see how that works out, " Smolka said. "Hopefully, she'll be able to repeat in both events."
In addition to Feil and senior Yanique Booth, who have already qualified for the NCAA East Regional, several other FAU athletes will attempt to achieve satisfactory marks for that meet, which will be held in Gainesville, FL on May 25-26. The 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams have both come very close to qualifying over the course of the season, and with just one chance left, Coach Smolka is keeping his athletes focused on the task at hand.
"We don't want them to go for broke, we want to concentrate on the little things like nutrition, rest and technique. If we do the little things right, the big picture will take care of itself."
The Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships will be held May 11-13 in Lafayette, LA. Live scoring for the Championships will be available at www.deltatiming.com.
