Bethune-Cookman College posted four runs in the first inning and then held on for a 5-2 win over Florida Atlantic University Thursday afternoon in Daytona Beach, FL. The Wildcats picked up four of their seven hit in the frame and used five double plays to hold the Owls to two runs on 12 hits.
BCC (29-22) got a leadoff hit in the first but the runner was erased on a ground ball. The next three batters reached base as two runs crossed the plate against FAU starter Alex Pepe. The left hander recorded one of his five strikeouts to get the second out before Chris Brown drove home two runs with a single up the middle.
A triple in the third inning by Angel Mercado led to the Wildcats' only other run of the contest.
Pepe suffered the loss to fall to 4-1 on the year after he allowed five runs, four earned on six hits in five innings. Chris Eberhart and Andrew Tomlin combined to work the final three innings and allowed one hit.
After inning ending doubles plays in the second and third innings, FAU (30-19) used three hits in the fourth inning to push across the first run on a Travis Ozga RBI single. The fifth and sixth innings ended again on double plays. The Owls mustered its last run in the eighth as Nick Arata led off the inning with a single. The shortstop ended the day 2-for-2. A Daniel Cook single moved Arata into scoring position before two fielder's choices gave FAU a run off reliever Felix Machado.
Joseph Gautier (5-2) earned the win after seven innings of work in which he gave up one run on nine hits and struck out three.
William Block led the Owls at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance.
The two teams will face off this weekend in a three-game series in Boca Raton. Thursday and Friday's starts are scheduled for 7 p.m. with a 1 p.m. start on Saturday.
