BOCA RATON, FL - After a positive showing at their first scrimmage on Saturday, Florida Atlantic University football hit the practice field on Monday ready to work on any adjustments from the weekend.
The Blitz package was a large early focus of the afternoon session. The entire defensive unit spent time working on blitz preparation on the strong and weak-side. The entire offense also acclimated themselves with the blitz, while facing their defensive counterparts.
During the one-on-one receiver drills, Sean Clayton connected with Frantz Simeon on a 15-yard sideline pattern. Cornerback Matt Andrews stood out defensively, coming up with an interception.
Members of special teams spent the majority of practice working on field-goal kicking in relatively windy conditions. Eight members of the squad took turns holding, kicking, and retrieving field goal attempts.
In the team session, Rusty Smith came up with the play of the day by fooling the defense on a play-action pass and than rifling the ball 40 yards into the hands of Frantz Simeon. Willie Floyd looked promising running the ball, taking a hand-off straight up the middle of the field for 17 yards. John Mertilus represented the defense by swatting a pass attempt and breaking through the line of scrimmage on more than one occasion.
The Owls are back on the practice field this Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
