TROY, AL - For the fourth time in as many games the Florida Atlantic University softball team dropped a one-run decision, falling 2-1 to Troy at the Trojan Softball Complex in game one of a doubleheader on Friday. FAU fell in game two 7-5.
In game one, starting pitcher Jen Musillo gave up two runs in the first on a bases-loaded single and hit batter, but blanked the Trojans the rest of the way. The Owls offense couldn't muster enough to forge a comeback, as FAU collected just three hits.
FAU's first hit was an RBI double off the bat of Amy Bukovich that scored Blair Bodenmiller from second. Bodenmiller reached on a walk and took second on a sacrifice bunt by Musillo.
The next ten Owl batters would be retired in order, before a two-out double by Lauren Crandall would snap the streak, but Trojan starter Angela Lopez would strike out Charlotte Baird to end the inning.
Trailing 2-1 in the seventh, Bukovich single off the glove of Trojan third baseman with one out. Melissa Moore would be hit by a pitch putting runners on first and second, but Lopez would induce a fly out and a strikeout to end the game with the tying run in scoring position.
In game two, FAU fell behind 4-0 in the first inning, before battling back to tie the game at five on a two-run home run by starting pitcher Amber Barton.
With the Owls trailing 4-0, Lauren Crandall hit her first home run of the year to put FAU on the board at 4-1. The Owls would get another run in the third on back-to-back doubles by Becky Brandies and Jenna Lopez to make it 4-2.
The Trojans would add a run in the third to push it back to 5-2. A bases-loaded walk to Brandies would force home a run in the fourth to make it 5-3. Barton's two-run home run would tie it at five in the fifth, but Troy's Courtney Davis would put the Trojans back on top for good with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth. They would add an insurance marker for the final tally in the sixth.
Saturday's conclusion of the three-game series has been pushed up to 1 p.m., eastern, to accommodate FAU's travel plans.
