DELAND, FL - The bats came out in full force for Florida Atlantic University softball on Thursday as every batter reached base at least once in a 12-hit 6-4 victory over Stetson University in DeLand, FL.
FAU (26-20, 6-6 SBC) jumped out on in the top of the first inning. With one down, Jenna Lopez doubled into left-center field. Mandy Fishback followed with a single and stole second to put two runners in scoring position. After a foul out, Amy Bukovich singled to left field scoring Lopez and Fishback to put the Owls up 2-0. With runners on the corners, Amber Barton grounded to the shortstop who tried to start a double play but Lauren Crandall beat the throw to second. Bukovich came in and gave the Owls an early three-run cushion.
In the top of the third, FAU would take a 4-0 lead thanks to the hustle of Bukovich. After reaching second on a throwing error by the third baseman, Bukovich would score on a single by Lauren Crandall thanks to a head-first slide past the Hatter catcher.
The offensive production would continue in the top of the fourth inning for the Owls. Becky Brandeis drilled a solo-homer to right center and a few batters later Bodenmiller singled down the third base line to plate Jenna Lopez who walked following the Brandies homer, putting FAU squarely in front 6-0.
Stetson (34-17, 8-4 A-Sun) though would not go down without a fight. In the bottom of the fourth, Leo Carreno doubled down the left field line and plated Andrea Migliori to cut the Hatter deficit to 6-1. The game tightened up further in the bottom of the fifth when Migliori blasted a three-run home run over the scoreboard in left center to cut the Owl lead to 6-4.
Entering the bottom of the seventh with the same score the Hatters had one last chance, but FAU hurler Jen Mussillo was up for the challenge. With runners on first and second and only one down, Mussillo induced a strikeout and a pop out to come away with the victory.
Mussillo (12-10) threw a complete game to earn her second straight win. She finished the night allowing seven hits on five walks with 10 strikeouts.
Amanda Lindsey (9-4) took the loss for Stetson. She only lasted 2.1 innings, surrendering six hits on four runs with three strikeouts.
The Owls will be back in action at 6 p.m. on Saturday as they face Louisiana-Monroe in a Sun Belt Conference doubleheader at FAU Softball Stadium.
