BOCA RATON, FL - Charlotte Baird hit her third home run of the season in game one and Blair Bodenmiller hustled around the bases for an inside the park home run as the Florida Atlantic University softball team split a doubleheader with Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday. FAU picked up the 10-2 win in five innings in game one and dropped a 6-2 decision in game two.
The Owls scored nine runs in the second inning, sending 13 batters to home plate. With the Owls trailing 1-0 heading into the frame, Amy Bukovich earned a one-out walk and Lauren Crandall lined a ball to right center for a triple. She would score after the throw to the plate eluded the cutoff man and bounced past the ULM catcher.
Melissa Moore then walked and Baird followed with a two-run shot to left field. With one out, Jenna Lopez reached on a throwing error and Mandie Fishback doubled to put runners on second and third for Bodenmiller with one out. Bodenmiller drove a single back up the middle that scored both runners and put FAU up 6-1.
Starting pitcher Jen Musillo then walked and Amy Bukovich doubled in Bodenmiller from second. A Crandall single would score both Musillo and Bukovich giving FAU a 9-1 lead.
The Owls would add a run in the third and went on to win 10-2. Musillo (13-10) got the start in the circle and threw the five-inning complete game, allowing four hits and two runs while walking three and striking out 10. The win was Musillo's third in as many starts.
In game two, Bodenmiller got things going early after Fishback doubled with two out. The sophomore from Orlando, FL lined a ball off the base of the wall in right center, and the carom bounced past both Warhawk outfielders allowing Bodenmiller to circle the bases without a throw, giving FAU a 2-0 lead.
The Warhkaws though would come back with three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-2 lead.
In the seventh, FAU would load the bases on two singles and a walk with no one out, but were unable to score as ULM was able to work around the threat, cutting down two runners at the plate on ground balls to the infield.
Amber Barton (4-6) took the loss, allowing six hits and six runs (four earned) while walking four and striking out five in seven innings of work.
The Owls (27-21, 7-7 SBC) will finish the three-game set with ULM (22-32, 2-15 SBC) on Sunday. The first pitch is scheduled for noon at FAU Softball Stadium.
