The Florida Atlantic University track team will travel to Baton Rouge, LA to participate in the LSU Tiger Classic this weekend.
The Owls are looking to continue the momentum they have gained so far in the outdoor season including a strong performance at the Disney World Invitational. Two school records were set, Yanique Booth bettered her NCAA Regional qualifying time in the 100-meter hurdles and many of the runners set personal records as the meet.
The weekend also proved to be somewhat frustrating, as several athletes just missed automatically qualifying for NCAA Regionals. Head Coach Alex Smolka has not let that fact discourage his runners.
"We remind (the team) that they're getting faster and that their times are still coming down, even though we're doing a lot of volume in practice. Our ultimate goal in to have as many athletes qualify (for Regionals) as possible, but it is about progressing over time. They still have plenty of time to qualify."
While many of the sprinters will be in Baton Rouge, Coach Smolka will travel with Friederike Feil to the Stanford Invitational, where she will attempt to qualify for the 3,000 meter steeplechase among some of the best distance runners in the country.
"(Friederike) definitely has the ability to qualify in the steeplechase. Anything she does on top of that will be gravy," Smolka said.
Feil will run at the Stanford Invitational on Friday March 30. The LSU Tiger Classic will be held Saturday March 31 at Bernie Moore Stadium in Baton Rouge, LA.
