BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team struggled to win an Atlantic Sun Conference match one year ago. Saturday afternoon they proved the difference a year could make with a 5-2 victory over Belmont University, the defending Atlantic Sun Conference Champion.
FAU (8-9) swept the doubles matches to take the day's first point. Singles competition began with freshman Olivier Sajous capturing the no. 1 seed match 6-1, 6-3. The victory was Sajous' 24th of the season an all-time single-season mark, breaking Doug Devriendt's record of 23 set in 2000. Sajous' record now stands at 24-4 overall and 15-1 in dual match play.
The match was captured at no. 4 singles with Corey Smith's three-set victory over Felipe Abreu 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
"We switched the doubles line-up around today and I think that brought energy to the team," said David Komie, FAU's head coach. "Corey Smith did a great job finishing out his match and clinched the win for us. Congratulations to Olivier for being so young and breaking the school record for wins in a season."
FAU will have a big task in it next match and could use a victory to help break into the countries top-100. The Owls will play host to Brown, currently ranked no. 59, noon, Monday March 24, at Patch Reef Park.
