BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team began playing the strongest schedule possible in 2006. That philosophy has continued in 2007 with the Owls coming close, once again, to its first upset of a ranked opponent in the 4-3 loss to Brown, on Monday.
"We let them off the hook," said David Komie, FAU's head coach. "Doubles play set the tone and we took no. 2 double to 9-8 and a tie break. When push came to shove Brown pushed harder. Some of that may be our youth but, we have been close so many times this year. We just need to get angry, step up and take one of these."
The doubles team of Corey Smith and Lawrence Harradine captured their match but saw Brown take double seed 2 and 3 for the match doubles point.
Individual play is where FAU scored led by no. 1 seed Olivier Sajous who defeated no. 116 Dan Hanegby 6-3, 6-2. The victory improves Sajous record to 16-1 in dual match play and 25-4 overall. Sajous, a freshman, continues to build on his single-season win record which now stands at 25. He is also on a 12 match-win streak.
Following Sajous at no. 1, Karol Szmurlo captured no. 2 singles 6-1, 6-4 and the third point was picked up by Lawrence Harradine at no. 6, 6-7 (6), 6-4, 1-0 (6).
FAU will play host to Texas San-Antonio, noon March 30 at Patch Reef Park.
