BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University softball team lost both games of its Sun Belt Conference opening doubleheader to Louisiana-Lafayette at FAU Softball Stadium on Saturday.
In game one, ULL loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the first, but starting pitcher Jen Musillo was able to work out of the jam with no harm done, striking out pinch hitter Meagan Godwin.
FAU scored in the bottom of the first when Ambar Jones followed a Jenna Lopez leadoff triple with an RBI single down the line to left field to put the Owls up 1-0.
The Owls would load the bases in the fifth and add an insurance tally on a Lauren Crandall sacrifice fly to left field that scored Jones from third to push the margin to 2-0 in favor of FAU.
Both pitchers were dominant the rest of the way until the seventh. Musillo allowed just one hit over the next five innings, but hit the leadoff batter in the seventh. The no. 9 hitter Karli Hubbard hit a liner to left that Crandall was able to glove, but the ball popped out when she hit the ground. After retiring Codi Runyan and Holly Tankersly, who have a combined 17 home runs on the year, Lacey Bertucci hit her fourth homer of the year over the fence in left center to put ULL up 3-2.
FAU put runners on second and third with two out after a single by Amy Bukovich, but couldn't push the tying run across to drop the game by a final score of 3-2.
In the second game of the evening, ULL scored four runs in the top of the third and hit a pair of solo home runs in the fourth to win game two, 7-2. Fishback had two of FAU's five hits and drove in a run.
The two teams will conclude the three-game set Sunday at 1 p.m. The Owls will then face Rutgers immediately following that contest.
