BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University softball team split its Sunday doubleheader at FAU Softball Stadium, falling 3-0 to Louisiana-Lafayette before defeating Rutgers 9-1 in six innings.
FAU's bats went cold in the loss to ULL, as the offense could muster just two hits in the ball game. With FAU trailing 1-0, Mandie Fishback singled up the middle in the first with two outs and was stranded.
No Owl would reach base again until the fourth, when Fishback reached on an error with one out and the Owls down 2-0. After a dropped foul gave Becky Brandies new life, she laced a pitch down the left field line for a double to put runners on second and third with just one out, but FAU failed to score as ULL retired the next 11 batters in order to finish the game.
Jen Musillo took the loss, falling to 4-5 on the year. She scattered 11 hits, giving up three runs and walking one while striking out 10.
The bats awoke against a struggling Rutgers team that is now just 4-12 on the season. Ambar Jones went 2-for-4 with a run scored, opening the scoring with a leadoff triple in the bottom of the first and scoring on a Mandie Fishback RBI single. Lauren Crandall went 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, driving in the ninth run for the Owls which forced the run rule. Amy Bukovich was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, and Vanessa Suarez was 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Blair Bodenmiller drove in the other run for FAU, going 1-for-2.
Amber Barton got the start on the mound, going five innings while giving up six hits, one run and four walks while striking out five to improve to 2-2. Meghan Doonan worked a perfect top of the sixth.
FAU (14-10, 0-3 SBC) is off until March 16, when the Owls will host their final home tournament of 2007, the Parent's Weekend Tournament.
Quinnipiac, Michigan State, Rutgers, Texas A&M and Massachusetts round out the tournament field.
