BOCA RATON, FL - After rain shuffled the match-ups and start times for the FAU Classic Championship Day, the Florida Atlantic University softball team couldn't muster up enough offense to overcome a two-out, two-run double in the top of the first by Long Island and fell 2-1 to the Blackbirds at FAU Softball Stadium on Sunday.
FAU was originally scheduled to play East Carolina, but travel arrangements forced the new pairings after a two-hour rain delay pushed the first game of the day back from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
LIU's Celina Castillo drove a two-run double to the left field fence with two out in the first and it would prove to be all the offense Blackbird starter Jenny Giles would need.
Jen Musillo drove a Giles offering over the left field fence for her second home run of the year, a solo shot, in the bottom of the second to cut the lead in half, but FAU wouldn't get another hit until Jenna Lopez singled in the fifth.
The Owls had their leadoff batter on after Musillo walked to lead off the seventh, but pinch runner Amber Barton was doubled off first following a failed sacrifice attempt.
Giles (2-1) earned the win, giving up just two hits and one run, walked two and struck out three over seven innings. Meghan Doonan (2-1) suffered her first setback of the season, giving up seven hits, two runs and three walks while striking out four in seven innings of work.
The Owls (5-5) are off until Friday when they host the Pepsi Classic at FAU Softball Stadium. James Madison, Texas Tech, Illinois, Bethune-Cookman and Jacksonville round out the field for the third tournament of FAU's 2007 campaign.
