The Florida Atlantic University baseball team used 16 hits to defeat La Salle University 16-8 Sunday afternoon at the FAU Beach Ball Bash. Daniel Bomback, Alex Silversmith and Justin Ferreira all recorded three hits in the 18 hit effort.
La Salle (2-2) jumped on the board in the first inning with three hits before FAU starting pitcher Mike Obradovich settled down in the next two innings. The Explorer then got the leadoff hitters on base in the fourth and fifth and saw them come around to score.
The FAU offense responded to the challenge after being behind 2-1 with 12 runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The team batted around in both frames and Daniel Bomback picked up four RBI with a grand slam and William Block added a three-run homer of his own. Both players lead the team with four homers on the year.
Obradovich (3-0) picked up the win after he worked five innings and allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out four. Justin Phillabaum and Joel Schmal both saw action out of the bullpen for FAU.
La Salle starter TJ Chism suffered the loss after 3 1/3 innings. He allowed six runs on five hits and struck out four. Billy Kern led the offense with a 4-for-5 effort at the plate.
FAU will make its first road trip next weekend when it heads to Rice for a three-game tournament. The Owls will take on two top-25 teams in Rice and Nebraska.
