This week the Florida Atlantic University swimming and diving teams will head to Nashville, TN for the Sun Belt Championships. The women's team will try to defend its 2006 title after winning the meet in its second year in the conference. The event will take place at the Tracy Caulkins Aquatics Center February 15-17.
Entering the weekend, the women hold the top times in the conference in 12 events. Along with that honor, the Owls broke five Sun Belt season records and enter the meet ranked third by collegeswimming.com in its top-25 mid-major poll.
Lauren Shue broke the regular-season record in the 1650 free with a time of 16:44.07 on January 27 at the University of Florida. Ellie Weberg broke two records, one by recording and NCAA `A' cut time. In the 200 breast she earned a trip to the NCAA Championships with a time of 2:12.44. In the 100 breast she holds a time three seconds faster than the next competitor as she posted a time of 1:01.85 on January 27.
The 400 medley relay posted a time of 3:47.59 in November at the Minnesota Invite that broke the SBC regular-season record. If the team can post a similar time it could break the championship record of 3:49.24.
Lisa Thompson enters the weekend as the top diver in the 1-meter event. Against Missouri State and Nebraska-Omaha she finished with an Zone qualifying score of 283.35 and set a school record.
On the men's side, Eren Onurlu will try to defend his 50 and 100 free titles. He currently holds the fastest time in the 50 free at 20.49 but is third in the 100 free by .54 seconds.
During the course of the three-day event, preliminaries begin at 11:30 a.m. et with the finals to start at 7 p.m. et on Thursday and Friday and 6:30 p.m. et on Saturday.
