The Florida Atlantic University football team are one game away from a share of the Sun Belt conference title. On Tuesday, the Owls continued preparation for the only team standing between them and the title, the first place Troy Trojans.
The offense worked on a number of situations, primarily working on the offense. Rusty Smith worked out of the shotgun and hit Jason Harmon on a post pattern; he would also hit Chris Bonner on an out route. The offense also worked on goal line situations, handing the ball off to Charles Pierre on a sweep, as well as play-action fakes and throws to the tight ends.
The defense had a motivated workout; as they practiced against what they'll see from quarterback Omar Haughabook and Troy. Cergile Sincere got a couple of tackles during team drills and Tavious Polo jumped on a screen for an interception.
Saturday's game will determine who gets a bid in the New Orleans Bowl on Friday, December 21. For Rusty Smith, it doesn't get any bigger.
"This is the biggest game I've ever played in," said Smith. "This is everything you ever dreamed to play for since high school, this is it."
The FAU Owls face Troy in Alabama on Saturday at 2 p.m. That game can be seen on CSS, a Comcast Cable affiliate (Channel 32 in the Palm Beach market, Channel 63 in the Miami/Dade market, Channel 41 in Broward County). The game can also be heard on WMEN-AM 640 in South Florida and online at fausports.com. On Thursday, join the FAU marching band, Owsley the mascot, members of the FAU dance team and the prOWLers for a rally before the final practice at 4 p.m. at the Oxley Center practice fields. Friday, there will be a sendoff of the football team at 1:30 p.m. at the Oxley Center prior to the busses departure at 2 p.m. Fans are encouraged to greet the team as the Owls begin their journey to Alabama to face the Trojans. On Saturday, the Owl Club will host a watch party for the game at Duffy's Sports Grill, 21212 St. Andrews Blvd, Boca Raton. Their will be free appetizers and drink specials throughout the game.
