BOCA RATON, FL (August 11, 2006) - After much anticipation, the first day of full pads finally came for Florida Atlantic University's football team.
The Owls ran inside running drills for the first portion of practice to reintroduce full contact to the squad. Hard-hitting action took place as the players let loose with a week's worth of anticipation.
After the players were re-acclimated to full contact, the team spread out and went to work in their individual groups. After a offense/defense combo session followed, the Owls lined up on both sides of the ball and had a controlled 11-on-11 drill. The defense came up with plenty of big plays, including an interception by George Allen and huge hits by Kris Bartels and Andre Clark, but the offense managed to taste the occasional victory as B.J. Manley gashed the defense for a pair of long runs, while Rusty Smith connected with Chad Wilkes on a deep pass completion.
Smith continued to share snaps with Sean Clayton as the two battle it out for the starting quarterback position. The two of them split the majority of the snaps in each drill, each completion important in determining who will lead FAU on September 2nd when the Owls open up versus Clemson.
The game time has been set for game #4 versus South Carolina on September 23rd. The Owls will take on the Gamecocks at 7 p.m.
