Virginia Commonwealth University held Florida Atlantic University to four hits as the Rams escaped with a 3-1 win on Friday night at FAU Stadium in game one of the three-game series. VCU scored two runs in the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie.
Mickey Storey pitched eight innings for FAU. Coming off a no-hitter last weekend, the sophomore worked eight innings and held VCU scoreless through the first fifth.
Two bloop singles in the sixth inning allowed the Rams to tie the game at one. Joe Meader picked up a single up the middle with one out. Justin Wright kept the inning alive with a bloop single to right field with two outs and Nate Anderson drove home the tying run with a bloop single to left.
Two errors in the eighth inning were costly for the Owls and allowed the lead to escape as Wright scored on an error. With the bases loaded Chris Jackson delivered a sacrifice fly to left field for the 3-1 win.
Storey (4-5) scattered 11 hits and struck out five while walking two. On the night, VCU left 13 runners on base.
Anthony Albano posted FAU's only RBI of the contest after a 10 pitch battle with VCU starting pitcher Harold Mozingo. Albano drove home William Block, who reached after being hit by a pitch, with a double to right centerfield in the second inning.
Mozingo worked six innings and struck out nine but did not receive a decision. Bill Weiland earned the win after he worked one inning and allowed one hit to improve to 3-1. Brett Walker picked up his fourth save of the year by allowing only one hit in the final two innings.
The two teams will square off in the second game of the series on Saturday at 1 p.m. at FAU Stadium. Chris Salberg is expected to face VCU's John Leonard. Leonard faced the Owls last season at the NCAA Coral Gables Regional. =
