CLERMONT, FL -- Krystena Castro has been dominant in her young career on the Florida Atlantic University women's track and field squad.
Castro heaved the discus 133-06 for her second-career individual championship, helping the Owls to a third-place finish. She also finished fifth in the shot put with a heave of 39-3.
"Krystena was a real bright spot for us. She's been very good all year. It was nice to finish in the top-three again, but we would have liked to finish higher," head coach Alex Smolka said. FAU has never finished lower than third at a conference championship since Smolka took over the program.
The 4x400m relay team picked up the Owls other individual conference championship. The Owls finished their 1,600m nearly seven seconds faster than their closest competition (3:50.84).
Also scoring points for the Owls on the track were Malika Clary in the 100m (6th, 13.04 seconds), 200m (2nd, 24.02 seconds), and 400m (5th, 57.39), and Marilyn Stephens in the 200m (4th, 29.47 seconds) and 400m (3rd, 55.71 seconds).
In the hurdles Yanique Booth finished second in the 100m hurdles (14.13 seconds) while Lindsay Glover finished fourth in the 100m hurdles (14.94 seconds) and second in the 400m hurdles (1:01.90). Trishauna Clarke finished fourth in the 400m hurdles, posting a personal-best time of 1:06.69.
FAU's 4x100m relay team was narrowly defeated by the quartet from Jacksonville University (45.84 seconds), edging out the Owls who finished in 46.05 seconds.
In the field events, Jian Jones jumped 5-3 in the high jump for a third-place finish, while Clarke finished in a tie for fifth, leaping 5-1.
Myra Remaly finished fifth in the pole vault (8-11.75) on Friday.
With the A-Sun Championship over, the Owls will turn their focus to the LSU Relays, held in Baton Rouge, LA on April 22.
Jacksonville won the A-Sun Outdoor Championship with 133 points. It is the school's second A-Sun track and field title of 2006. The Dolphins claimed the indoor title earlier this year.
