BOCA RATON, FL - Kathryn Stauffer (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) threw her top outing of the season as the Florida Atlantic University softball team took the nightcap of the conference-opening doubleheader with Campbell on Friday 2-0 at FAU Softball Stadium.
Stauffer (5-11) struck out a career-high eight batters and walked none while allowing just one hit in recording her second shutout of the season. The freshman faced just 23 batters - two over the minimum - in claiming her fourth win in her last six decisions.
The Owls (13-18, 1-1 Atlantic Sun) gave Stauffer run support in the first inning, as junior Jessica Sachs (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.) led off with a single, extending her hitting streak to six games. A sacrifice by freshman Amy Bukovich (Boca Raton, Fla.) advanced Sachs to second, before a single to center by senior Danielle Arriaga (Miami, Fla.) plated the first run of the game.
The Owls capitalized on their next big threat in the fourth inning. Junior Shauna Corso (Seal Beach, Calif.) started the inning with a walk, followed by a single from junior Jen Musillo (Tequesta, Fla.).
Two outs later junior Jenna Lopez (Orangeburg, N.Y.) reached on a single to third base, advancing Musillo to third and junior Charlotte Baird (Hendersonville, Tenn.) to second. With the bases now loaded, Sachs appeared to ground into an inning-ending fielder's choice to shortstop but a hussling Lopez beat the throw to second to secure the RBI for Sachs when Musillo crossed home plate.
Campbell (19-15, 1-1 A-Sun) did not present a significant threat in the entire game, as no Camel advanced beyond first base. A two-out single in the third and a two-out error in the sixth created Campbell's two base runners.
Kelly Weaver (9-6) took the loss, allowing seven hits and two earned runs.
Campbell 9, FAU 2
Musillo (5-6) surrendered seven runs on six hits in four innings as Campbell took the opener 9-2 over Florida Atlantic. The Camels did most of their damage in the second, getting a two-run double, an RBI single and two-run home run from consecutive batters.
The Owls scored their runs in the fourth on an RBI double from Arriaga to score junior Mandie Fishback (Banks, Ore.) and another two-bagger by Corso that brought Arriaga home. Corso had two hits in the game.
Florida Atlantic returns to A-Sun action on Sunday, Mar. 26 at 1:00 p.m. in a doubleheader with Gardner-Webb at FAU Softball Stadium.
