BOCA RATON, FL. - Amy Bukovich (Boca Raton, Fla.) led the charge offensively as the Florida Atlantic softball team closed the 2006 FAU Dunkin' Donuts Classic with a 5-3 victory over Mississippi on Sunday morning at FAU Softball Stadium.
Bukovich collected two hits, two runs and an RBI in the game. The freshman batted in junior Jenna Lopez (Orangeburg, N.Y.) with an RBI single in the first inning and eventually scored on a grounder by classmate Kala Guy (Hollywood, Fla.).
Senior Danielle Arriaga (Miami, Fla.) also scored when the grounder by Guy led to a throwing error by Ole Miss shortstop Rebecca McIntire. The Owls put three runs total on the board in the first.
Bukovich came back to lead off the third with a single and scored on a one-out triple by junior Shauna Corso (Seal Beach, Calif.). Guy brought Corso home on a ground out to finish the day with two RBIs.
FAU pitcher Vanessa Suarez (Orange Park, Fla.) surrendered solo runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings, working 5 1/3 innings to record her second victory of the weekend. The freshman is now 2-0 on the season after making her first career start.
The Owls finish the weekend 3-2. FAU (4-6) returns to the field next weekend at the NFCA Classic in Columbus, Ga., opening with Nebraska on Friday, Feb. 24 at 5:30 p.m.
