Castro, DMR Team Crowned A-Sun Champs on Day One

JOHNSON CITY, TN -- Krystena Castro and the distance medley relay team were crowned Atlantic Sun Champions on a record-setting day one of the Atlantic Sun Championships on Friday as the Florida Atlantic University women's track team got off to a hot start in Johnson City, TN.
Castro won the shot put with a heave of 42-6.75 and the distance medley relay team compled the race in 12:07.78. The team of Christina Dutko, Lindsay Glover, Artemis Saridakis, and Raynell Hagberg finished a full 12 seconds ahead of the remainder of the field. Both efforts are school and A-Sun indoor records.
On the strength of those two victories and several other strong performances, the Owls currently sit in third place with 32 points, 12 behind Jacksonville in the battle for the conference title. Thanks to several strong qualifying efforts, FAU is poised to continue its strong performance on day two.
Other standout efforts on day one include a fourth-place finish in the pentathlon by Jian Jones on the strength of second-place efforts in the event's high jump and 800m competitions.
After her strong performance in the pentathlon high jump, Jones earned a second-place finish and eight points for the Owls' team total with a leap of 5-03.75. Linn Modin also participated in the high jump, leaping 4-07.75.
Yanique Booth posted the second-best qualifying time in the 60m dash, crossing the line in 7.63 seconds. While the top six times advanced to the finals, Jian Jones and Trishauna Clarke just missed qualifying, finishing in a tie for eighth at 7.86 seconds.
Booth also posted the top qualifying time in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.63 seconds, and Clark earned a finals spot as well posting a time of 9.59 seconds, good enough for the sixth and final qualifying spot.
Other participants posting final results include Clark's leap of 17-2 in the long jump (8th) and Amy Springer's 17th place effort in the 3,000m, finishing in 11:44.47.
The Inaugural A-Sun Indoor Championship will conclude on Saturday on the campus of host East Tennessee State University. Competitors earn points for their team by finishing in the top six of a finals event. The point breakdowns are listed below.
