BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic softball team opened the 2006 season with a victory on Friday, defeating Bethune-Cookman 8-0 in five innings at the 2006 FAU Worth Invitational.
Jen Musillo (Tequesta, FL) made a spectacular debut on the mound, going the distance while allowing just two hits and striking out four. The junior transfer from Palm Beach Community College allowed just one runner to reach base in the first four innings and recorded two strikeouts to end a threat in the top of the fifth.
FAU put four runs on the scoreboard in the first inning, as junior Mandie Fishback (Banks, OR) delivered three RBIs on a bases-loaded double. Fishback eventually came home on a double steal and then scored again in the fourth when she blasted a triple to right field and reached home on a throwing error.
Fishback finished with two hits, two runs and three RBIs, while freshman Blair Bodenmiller (Orlando, FL) had three hits and scored twice.
East Carolina 1, FAU 0
Freshman Kathryn Stauffer (Pembroke Pines, FL) pitched six innings and allowed just two hits as the Owls fell to East Carolina 1-0 in the finale of day one at the 2006 FAU Worth Invitational. Stauffer allowed just one runner past second base - that being the lone run of the game scored by the Pirates in the fifth.
Bodenmiller and freshman Christine Houghtaling (Miami, FL) had one hit each to lead FAU at the plate.
Action at the Worth Invitational resumes Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. at FAU Softball Stadium.
