Owls Drop Two in Worth Invite

BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic softball team suffered a pair of 2-1 defeats Saturday evening during the 2006 FAU Worth Invitational at FAU Softball Stadium.
Kathryn Stauffer (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) took the loss in both games, falling to 0-3 on the year. Stauffer worked nine innings on the evening, striking out eight and walking just one.
The freshman came on in relief and worked FAU (1-3) out of a no-out, bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning in the opener against Pittsburgh, giving up just one run that was charged to starter Jen Musillo (Tequesta, Fla.). Stauffer eventually surrendered the decisive run to break a 1-1 tie in the sixth.
Freshman Amy Bukovich (Boca Raton, Fla.) knocked in senior Jessica Sachs (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.) in the first inning against Pitt. Musillo struck out six Panthers in her four-plus innings of work.
South Carolina 2, FAU 1
After giving up two runs in the first inning in the nightcap with South Carolina, Stauffer allowed only one runner to move past first base the rest of the evening while facing 21 batters in the final six innings. FAU plated just one run - in the seventh inning - as the Owls collected three hits against USC freshman sensation Christie Hamilton, who had 12 strikeouts on the night.
The Owls' lone tally against the Gamecocks came behind a double by Mandie Fishback (Banks, Oreg.) and an RBI groundout by freshman Becky Brandies (Madison, Fla.) for the second out of the final inning.
FAU wraps up its opening weekend with the third-place game against Purdue (2-2) on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
