BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team had an eventful year under Head Coach Kos Donev. The team advanced to the finals of the Atlantic Soccer Conference Tournament in its first year in the league.
The year started at the UK Invitational where midfielder Ran Poliker and keeper Phillip Lamarre were named to the All-Tournament team. The team opened its home schedule with a pair of 1-0 victories over Mercer and Binghamton, the shutouts were the first two of a school record-tying six the Owls would record on the season. They also earned Lamarre, a freshman from Margate, Goalie of the Week honors from the Atlantic Soccer Conference.
FAU's first ever Atlantic Soccer Conference game would come against Longwood. The match ended in a 1-1 tie. The Owls would record a 1-0 win at Jacksonville, before losing their next three matches, including two conference matches. The Owls record then stood at 3-8-1, and they were in sixth place in the conference.
The season's turning point would come in a 2-0 victory over NJIT. Ran Poliker, one of six seniors honored before the match, would assist on both FAU goals. The win would send the Owls on a three match winning streak, which vaulted them from sixth to third in the conference.
The Owls would go on to the ASC tournament, where they avenged an earlier loss to Hartwick 1-0. The Owls would fall in the finals to host Adelphi, when a furious second-half rally fell short.
FAU would end the season with a 7-9-1 record. Forward Javier Carrillo and defender Andreas Heggelund were named to the All-Atlantic Soccer Conference second team. The Owls, are expected to return 11 players who saw regular action, including their top two goal scorers and are set to continue their success in their second year in the ASC.
