BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University Owls were given a few days to collect themselves after Wednesday's 6-0 loss to Louisiana-Lafayette. Thursday was an off day and Friday was the equivalent of a light Sunday practice. On Saturday afternoon, FAU returned to the Tom Oxley practice field to begin the gear up for Arkansas State (4-2, 2-0) next Saturday at 4 p.m.
"There is always room to improve on defense even after a shutout," said Ted Czepiga. "We've just got to go out now and take care of Arkansas State."
Punt protection was an early item touched upon during practice. The Owl's punter this year has been Mike O'Neil. On the season he is averaging 39 yards per punt. The unit's return team is lead by Frantz Simeon who has taken back all eight punts this season for FAU. The sophomore is averaging 14.6 yards a return.
After individual unit instruction, the squad broke into one-on-one receiver drills or the inside drill. Sean Clayton and Rusty Smith both looked accurate completing passes to receivers in single back coverage. The two quarterbacks have nearly identical completion percentages on the season. Clayton has successfully thrown 51.6% of his passes while the freshman Smith has completed 50.6% of his attempts.
The team drills during practice took an interesting twist. Instead of each unit working with their scout team, the first team offense squared off against the Owl's first team defense. Sean Clayton connected with Willie Rose on a swing pass that Rose took 35-yards down the field. Practices ended with field-goal kicking and block attempts.
FAU has off on Sunday and Monday, and will return to the practice Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
