Kelly Paiva was named the tournament MVP for the second weekend in a row as Florida Atlantic University won two matches on Saturday at the FAU DoubleTree Classic. The Owls defeated Fairfield University 3-1 in the morning before improving to 6-0 with a 3-0 win over Furman in the nightcap.
With a career-high 31 kills against Fairfield, Paiva (Minas Gerais, Brazil) guided FAU to a 29-31, 30-27, 30-27, 30-23 win over the Stags. The senior finished with a double-double with 22 digs.
In game one, the Stags (2-3) snuck away with a win as they hit .232. After falling behind 4-9 in game two, FAU went on a 10-point run to go ahead 14-9 behind the serving of Lauren McHugh (Lighthouse Point, FL). McHugh finished the match with a season-high five aces and added 17 digs.
The FAU defense kept the Stags in check with 14 blocks. Katie Arvidson finished with a career-high nine blocks, one short of the FAU record.
Against Furman, Paiva again led the Owls with 13 kills and 11 digs as took the 30-20, 30-23, 30-28 win.
"Kelly is the foundation of the team," said head coach Jody Brown. "She is the type of person you can go to all the time. If she doesn't get a kill she can do something dynamic to stop the other team."
Errors plagued the Paladins as they commited 24 errors and only hit .058 in the match. Five ball handling errors and five service errors gave the Owls 10 free points in the match.
Justine Petry (Trumansburg, NY) added a career-high 12 kills and three blocks.
Casey LaRocca guided the offense with 85 assists on the day.
FAU will play its first road matches of the year on Friday when the team heads to the USF Best Western Invitational. The team will face Eastern Washington on Friday and USF and Appalachian State on Sunday.
