BOCA RATON, FL -- After scoring four goals in a 4-0 victory against North Florida, the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team hopes its offensive woes are over.
Coming into Friday night's match up with the Ospreys, Susanna Lehtinen had scored five of Florida Atlantic's seven goals through six games. Tonight, three different goal-scorers (Lehtinen was not one of them) notched the tallies for the Owls in their fourth win on the season. Lehtinen did manage to chip in her first assist of the year.
Senior Denise Brolly scored twice, including the game's first goal on a penalty kick with just 19 seconds left in the first half. Brolly would later score on a sinking shot from the top of the box in the 49th minute. Janeke Simpkins scored her first career goal at FAU in the 54th minute, and Katri Nokso-Koivisto netted her first of the season to seal the victory in the 59th minute.
The Owls' defense was once again on display as well, as they allowed just one shot attempt that went well over the crossbar from outside the box.
Between the pipes, freshman Jessica Badders played the first half and junior Megan Coyne played the second. Neither was forced to make a save during the combined shutout. It is the second consecutive shutout for FAU, and their fourth on the year.
Tonight's match-up marked the first-ever between UNF and FAU. It also marked the first Atlantic Sun conference match in UNF's history.
With the win, FAU improves to 4-3, 1-0 in A-Sun play. Their next game is Sunday vs. Florida International University in Miami at 7 p.m.
