For the third straight week, Florida Atlantic University won a volleyball tournament and Kelly Paiva was named tournament MVP as the Owls improved to 9-0 with a 3-0 win over Appalachian State on Saturday at the USF Best Western Invitational 33-31, 30-25, 30-18.
FAU narrowly took game one after trailing 27-29. Janelle Sarauw and Katie Arvidson combined for one of FAU's 11 blocks before Arvidson recorded a kill from the middle to tie the game at 29. After trading points, Arvidson added another of her 17 kills before a block by Kelly Paiva and Justine Petry gave the Owls the 33-31 win in game one. Petry finished the match with a career-high six blocks.
The offense took over in the second game of the match for Florida Atlantic as the team hit .513 with 23 kill and only three errors. The team finished the day with a .360 hitting percentage led by Paiva's 20 kills.
Defensively, Makra Condill and Dimitra Samas led the team for the second straight match with 12 and 11 digs, respectively.
Appalachian State (5-3) was led by Stefanie Panzer's 12 kills and Kali Rumberger's 18 digs.
Casey LaRocca and Janelle Sarauw were also named to the All-Tournament Team. LaRocca finished the day with 50 assists and eight digs, while Sarauw hit .625 with five kills in the match.
For the week Paiva led the team with 67 kills (6.70 kill per game) and added 27 digs and five blocks. LaRocca distributed 141 assists (14.10 per game), while Sarauw hit .464 with 18 kills in 28 attempts.
