Owls Earn Two Five-Game Wins

With two five-game wins on Saturday, Florida Atlantic University's volleyball team improves to 3-0 on the season by defeating Stetson University and Florida International. Kelly Paiva was named the tournament MVP and freshmen Katie Arvidson and Casey LaRocca were named to the all-tournament team.

Paiva led FAU with 54 kills on the day and held a .316 hitting percentage from the outside. Against Stetson she tallied 15 digs as the Owls defeated their Atlantic Sun Conference foe for the fourth straight time.

After taking game one, Florida Atlantic dropped the next two games before hitting .324 in game four to advance to force a deciding game, where the team hit .368 with nine kills in 19 attempts.

LaRocca distributed 49 assists with 16 going to Arvidson. Janelle Sarauw and Justine Petry also tallied double-digit digs in the win.

DeeAnn Dempsey led the Hatters (0-2) with 15 kills and 15 digs.

In the rivalry between Florida Atlantic and Florida International, the last six meetings have been split. The Owls finished with the 27-30, 23-30, 30-25, 30-21, 15-8 win after spotting the Golden Panthers a 2-0 lead. FIU used aggressive serving to keep FAU out of its offense and finished with 10 service aces on the night. Anita Szymanska and Mariana Drumeva each finished with three.

FAU then hit .472 in game three with only one attacking error to force extra games.

Libero Makra Condill finished with 18 digs along with FIU's Dyionna Smith and Carolina Cano to lead both teams.

At the net, FIU's Laura Vogel finished with 10 blocks and added 15 digs against the Owls.

LaRocca collected 62 assists as FAU finished with a .321 hitting percentage, it's highest of the season.

Florida Atlantic will host its second tournament of the year on September 2-3 in FAU Gym when Fairfield, Furman and Bethune-Cookman will play in the FAU DoubleTree Classic.
