Florida Atlantic University players wore new numbers and new faces donned numbers previously worn by the familiar Saturday afternoon on the Tom Oxley practice field. But after 116 plays it was the Owls defense that dominated the day and came away with a 34-24 victory.
"The defense won it, but it wasn't one to be very proud of," said head coach Howard Schnellenberger. The offense was about as bad as we have been. You can sure tell how young they are because there is no unit pride yet. They haven't been together long enough to have those qualities."
Veteran, Danny Embick led the way for the offense completing 14 of his 21 pass attempts for 137 yards and a touchdown. Embick also ran for 78 yards, including an 11 yard score.
"Obviously, I was really happy with Embick. He widened the gap between himself and his underlings and demonstrated he is a winning player," added Schnellenberger.
Embick rotated with redshirt freshman McKinson Souverain who completed one pass for four yards, but did most of his damage on the ground with 31 yards on six carries. Sean Clayton, a sophomore transfer, completed 7 of 15 pass attempts for 77 yards.
Dantson Dareus also played like the experienced player he is with six receptions for 60 yards. Rotating in with fellow tight end Dareus, Darrion Porter-Isom was second among the receivers with 49 yards and three catches.
With the quarterbacks expected to play a larger role in the running game, 10 Owls carried the ball Saturday. Charles Pierre had 16 attempts for 80 yards, Souverain had 31 yards and D'Ivory Edgecomb had 14 yards. Collectively, FAU had 64 attempts on the ground and gained 280 yards.
The squad will use the game for review on Monday when the team takes to the field 3:30 p.m. FAU is expected to hold that same practice time again on Wednesday and again on Friday with a Saturday scrimmage, time TBA. Fans wishing to join coach Fred O'Connor in the Founders' Lounge from 4 p.m. through the end of practice will be treated to drinks and snacks.
Defensively, several pass attempts were batted down, John DeShields had the first interception, Quincy Skinner had the second and Erik Benson grabbed the day's third and handed off to Josh Pinnick who ran for the score.
Note: The modified scoring system awards one point for a defensive stop. Three points for a turnover and touchdowns are scored in a traditional fashion. The ball begins on the 40. The offense works with three down until it is inside the 20 and it then works with four downs.
