The rollercoaster ride of a 2005 regular season is almost over for Coach Joan Joyce and her FAU softball team. With their final Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader set for Sunday against the visiting Jacksonville Dolphins, the Owls face the possibility of being anything from a two seed to a five seed at next month's A-Sun Championship. When you consider that 1998 was the last time the Owls were not a one seed, Joyce and her squad are entering unfamiliar territory. But with this year's championship to be played once again in Boca Raton, the home field advantage may just be enough to propel the Owls back to the NCAA Tournament for a seventh consecutive season. Don't count them out just yet.
Last week saw the Owls play the two biggest doubleheaders of their conference schedule against first-placed Troy and perennial contenders Stetson.
On Friday, FAU took game one 8-3 against Troy in a superb battle that saw the Owls knock star Trojan pitcher Jocelyn McCallum from the game in the sixth inning after allowing a season-high eight runs on 11 hits. Troy came back to win game two, 3-2, on a sixth-inning three-run homer: a victory that clinched at least a tie of the regular season title for the Trojans.
Saturday saw a big let-down for FAU as their bats disappeared in two losses to the Hatters. The Owls left 19 runners on base in the 3-2 and 3-1 defeats that saw them drop from second to fourth in the A-Sun standings. FAU is now tied with UCF and Stetson at 12-6 in A-Sun play, but are only a game ahead of Lipscomb, who are 10-6 with four games still to play. Joining those four teams in the championship will be Jacksonville and Troy, who have clinched the No. 1 seed.
Let's take a look at the Owls' opponent this week, Jacksonville (all records and statistics as of April 26, 2005):
Jacksonville Dolphins (30-28, 9-9 A-Sun) - Sunday, May 1, 2005, 6& 8 p.m. @ FAU Field
Jacksonville join Lipscomb as one of the conference's surprise teams this season. Picked to finish eighth in both preseason polls, the Dolphins have taken care of business against the weaker teams in the A-Sun this season with a 7-3 mark. However, they have struggled against the premier teams by going only 2-6 with their victories coming against UCF and Stetson. They have also struggled away from home, where they are 12-25. Leading the way offensively for the Dolphins is senior first baseman Lauren Redfern, who sits sixth in the conference with a .378 average and is tied for the conference lead in doubles with 20. Also hitting over .300 are juniors Katie Pestrak (.324) and Stephanie Farabee (.314). Pitching-wise, the Dolphins have a solid 1-2 combination in freshman Shannon Jensen, the reigning A-Sun pitcher-of-the-week, and junior Katie Dobson. Jensen has a 1.66 ERA on the season, good enough for eighth in the A-Sun, while Dobson is not far behind on 2.08.
All-time series: FAU leads 4-0.
Last meeting: FAU won 4-2 on 5/3/04.
Tickets for Sunday's doubleheader are only $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and youths and are available at the gate or by calling 1-866-FAU-OWLS. For those unable to make it to the games, live statistics from both contests will be available right here on www.fausports.com.
