Boca Raton, FL - Saturday's full scrimmage, the team's first this spring, may have jumpstarted the FAU football team, as they came out to Monday's practice crisp and efficient. Head coach Howard Schnellenberger was pleased with the effort.
"We had a much better practice today, particularly offensively," Schnellenberger said. "They're alive and well, and they're doing what it takes to get better."
Once again, the defensive backfield played well, though that has become common-place for the team's most experienced unit. Senior cornerback Quincy Skinner showed good coverage while junior defensive back John DeShields displayed good awareness of the schemes at safety. The unit has even taken it upon itself to help out the young receivers.
"[Experience] is always a positive," Skinner said. "We're on defense, but I go over and tell the receivers certain ways they can beat a defensive back. We try to help them out and show them moves they can use, because on Saturday, we don't have to play against them, we're all on the same team."
The Owls practice again Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m., and all fans are encouraged to attend.
Notable: Freshman wide receiver Frantz Simeon made a great adjustment on an underthrown deep ball and showed consistent separation in one-on-one drills. He also caught nearly everything thrown at him. Senior tight end Dantson Dareus looked good again with several big grabs.
Injuries: Freshman linebacker Ted Czepiga, who was running second-team, suffered an ACL tear April 2 which wasn't discovered until last week. He underwent surgery today and will be out several months.
