Coming off of its first road trip and a three-game sweep over UNLV, Florida Atlantic returns home to face Boston College in a midweek game before opening conference play on Friday against Gardner-Webb.
Boston College holds a 3-4 record entering the week. The Eagles face LaSalle on Wednesday before facing FAU at 7 pm at FAU Stadium. BC has four players with batting averages over .400. Jared McGuire leads the team with a .480 average and seven RBI.
After dropping the first four games of the season in Nashville, the Eagles have won all three contests in South Florida. They defeated LaSalle and Temple by a combined score of 36-4.
The pitching staff is holding opponents to a .227 batting average and has recorded 62 strikeouts in 55 innings.
FAU's Jason Costello will make his first start of the season against Boston College. The left-handed pitcher has made two appearances this season and has struck out six in four innings of work. Despite his 6.75 ERA, the senior is holding opponents to a .214 batting average.
Atlantic Sun play opens on Friday when GWU visits Boca Raton for a three-game series. A doubleheader on Friday beginning at 3 pm will be followed by a single game on Saturday at 1 pm.
The Bulldogs enter the week with a 6-6 record and are led by Atlantic Sun Preseason Player-of-the-Year Zach Ward. The junior right-handed pitcher holds a 3-0 record with a 1.11 ERA. He has recorded 31 strikeouts in 24 1/3 innings and is holding opponents to a .086 batting average. The pitching staff holds a 3.65 ERA and holds a strikeout to walk ratio of 2.5.
The GWU offense is led by Jay McConnell with a .419 batting average. The freshman leads the team with 11 RBI and three home runs.
Facing the Gardner-Webb offense will be FAU pitchers Mike Crotta (RHP), Chris Salberg (LHP), and Will Mann (RHP). Crotta leads the team with a 3-0 record and 1.38 ERA after throwing seven scoreless innings against UNLV last weekend. Salberg (0-2) will throw the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday, while junior Will Mann will face the Bulldogs on Saturday. Mann leads the team with 19 strikeouts.
