The Florida Atlantic University softball team returns home this weekend for the third of four tournaments the Owls are hosting this 2005 season. The four-team FAU Doubletree Worth Classic features the Owls plus Bethune-Cookman, No. 20 Florida International, and UMass.
The Owls are coming off a trip to the elite NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Georgia, during which they went 0-4, although two of those four losses did come to ranked opponents Alabama (No. 7) and Oregon (No. 18). The other two defeats came at the hands of Creighton and DePaul.
Senior right-hander Candice Freel had an unlucky weekend, finishing with a 0.67 ERA, but going 0-2 thanks to some key unearned runs in her outings. The Owls struggled offensively, managing only three runs in four games and hitting .112 as a team.
Let's take a look at the Owls' opponents this weekend:
Massachusetts (1-4) - Friday, March 4th, 2 p.m. @ FAU Field
After losing 8-0 to No. 23 Texas A&M in their season-opener at the rain-disrupted Kajikawa Classic in Arizona, the Minutewomen joined the Owls in competing at the NFCA Leadoff Classic over the weekend. They finished the event 1-3 by defeating Cal State-Northridge but falling to No. 16 Georgia, No. 17 Nebraska and South Carolina. Picked to win the A-10 regular season title for the 11th straight time in 2005, UMass returns seven starters from last year's squad that went 34-17 and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament after losing in the A-10 tournament. Six of their seven top hitters return as well as two veteran pitchers.
All-time series: Tied at 3-3.
Last meeting: FAU won 1-0 on 3/6/04.
Bethune-Cookman (7-13) - Friday, March 4th, 7 p.m. @ FAU Field
The Wildcats come to Boca for the second time this season after beating FAU 1-0 and finishing as runners-up to Georgia Tech in the FAU Worth Invitational in mid-February. B-CC saw both ends of the emotional spectrum last week as they upset No. 14 Florida 5-0 on Tuesday before going 0-6 at the tough Palm Springs Classic this past weekend. Led offensively by slick-fielding shortstop Amber Jackson and fellow junior Tiffany Bowser, the Wildcats also have two solid pitchers in sophomore Viveca Patterson and senior Lauren McCoy.
All-time series: FAU leads 16-1.
Last meeting: Bethune-Cookman won 1-0 on 2/11/05.
No. 20 Florida International (15-5) - Saturday, March 5th, 11 a.m. @ FAU Field
Since beating the Owls 3-2 on January 29th for their first win of the season, the Golden Panthers have gone 14-5 to force their way into the top 25. Pitching is powering FIU to their early-season success as the Panthers bats have yet to come around (.228 team batting average). All three starters have ERAs under 0.75 with Tiffany Ore's 0.35 leading the way. Opponents are hitting only .172 off FIU pitching, while their 167/30 strikeout to walk ratio is very impressive.
All-time series: FAU leads 30-16.
Last meeting: FIU won 3-2 on 1/29/05.
