BOCA RATON, FL - An 18-point advantage at the free throw line carried the Georgetown Hoyas over the Florida Atlantic Owls, 71-62, in women's college basketball on Wednesday evening at FAU Arena.
The Owls (3-6) sprinted out of the lockerroom with an 11-0 run and eventually built their advantage to 18-2 behind eight points from sophomore Missy Glaser in the first 6:14 of the game. FAU's lead was double figures for the remainder of the half, with the scoreboard showing, 37-27, going into the break.
Not even foul trouble could slow FAU during the opening stanza. Georgetown (6-4) went into the double bonus with 9:55 remaining in the half but connected on just 9-19 charity tosses.
Meanwhile, the Owls torched the nets before the break, hitting 14-25 (56.0%) from the field. Defensively, FAU generated seven steals among 11 GU turnovers, leading to 12 points for the hosts.
Glaser netted 12 points in the half, connecting on three three-pointers. Katrina Wheeler had nine points and five rebounds for the Hoyas.
The second half started out strong for Georgetown, which scored 13 of the first 16 points to knot the score at 40 with 12:38 to go. FAU responded with a 10-4 spurt behind two treys from senior Sharia Young.
The Hoyas finally claimed their first lead of the game 58-57 at the 3:12 mark, an advantage they would not relinquish the rest of the game. GU connected on 13-14 free throws in the final 3:16 and hit 19-21 (90.5%) at the stripe in the second half.
Overall, Georgetown was 28-40 (70.0%) on charity tosses in the game on 33 FAU personal fouls. Meanwhile, FAU shot 10-13 (76.9%) on 11 Hoya fouls.
GU finished the night with a 30-22 advantage in the paint and 23-12 edge in points off turnovers.
Glaser led FAU with 15 points and four steals. Shuteamia Brayboy had six assists for the Owls.
Wheeler had 17 points and 12 rebounds for Georgetown. Bethany Lesueur and Kieraah Marlow added 20 points each.
