MACON, GA - The first conference road game of the season ended in defeat for Florida Atlantic University as it fell to the Mercer Bears 70-60 on Monday afternoon. Shontavia Williams led the Owls with a season-high 24 points. She connected on 9-11 free throws to become the All-Time leader in both makes and attempts at FAU.
The Owls jumped ahead of the bears 6-0 in the early going as Williams connected on two triples in the first three minutes of play. FAU built its lead to 10-4 at the 13:14 mark, but Mercer went on a 12-4 run to take the lead 16-14 with 8:08 left in the half.
The Bears ended the stanza with a 6-0 spurt to hold a 27-21 advantage at the break. Mercer shot 83.3% (15-18) at the free-throw line compared to a 1-6 effort from FAU.
Demina Anderson provided a spark off the bench for the Owls with seven first half points on a 3-4 shooting effort. She ended with 11 points on the night.
The Bears never gave up the lead in the second half as they connected on 40.7% of their shots in the stanza.
FAU got within five points, 65-60, with 52 seconds to play when Missy Glaser deposited a pair of charity tosses. Glaser reached double-figures for the fifth straight as she finished with 11 points.
Free throws were the difference as FAU committed 32 fouls and Mercer made them pay shooting 78.3 % (36-46) at the line.
Sarah Russell led the Bears with 14 points and Rhonda Owens added 10 in the win.
