After an exciting off-season that brought Matt Doherty and a handful of new recruits to Florida Atlantic University, the men's basketball team will finally kick off its 2005-06 campaign this weekend.
The Owls will open up on the road with a pair of non-conference opponents, Colgate and Northwestern.
FAU will open at Colgate, who has already tipped-off its season by participating in the Iowa Regional. The Raiders won their opener against Utah Valley State, 55-42 to advance further into the regional.
Kyle Roemer and Kendall Chones led the way for Colgate, scoring 13 points each. Jon Foss chipped in 10 off the bench. They shot over 51 percent as a team for the contest.
The Owls have played one preseason game, a 94-73 win over Florida Tech. Freshman Paul Graham led FAU in the scoring column, dropping 20 points in from the bench. Rodney Webb chipped in 19 points and eight rebounds to lead the starters.
Six players cracked the double-digit mark in points for FAU, and they posted a +11 margin in assists vs. turnovers. (24-13). Shooting 59 percent from the field aided the Owls' cause as well. Tip-off vs. Colgate is set for Friday at 8 p.m in Hamilton, NY.
After the opener, the Owls will travel to Evanston, IL. where they will face the Wildcats of Northwestern. It will be the first meeting between the two schools.
Like Colgate, the Wildcats have already started their season. NU is participating in the BCA invitational, and has advanced to the finals. They defeated Lehigh (61-59) and Charlotte (61-47) to earn the right to face UNC Wilmington on Nov. 15.
In the early going, defense and rebounding are leading the Wildcats. They are +24 through two games in rebounding and have blocked nine shots in those contests. Vedran Vukusic is averaging 26.5 points per game to lead the way for the Northwestern offense.
The game is scheduled for Monday at 7 p.m.
