Justine Petry tied her career-high with 21 kills as Florida Atlantic University defeated the University of North Florida 3-1 Wednesday evening at FAU Gym. Petry added five blocks as the Owls defeated the Ospreys in the first meeting between the two teams.
After jumping ahead 2-0, FAU (18-2) suffered a lapse before closing out the match in game four 30-17, 30-24, 20-30, 30-27. Florida Atlantic never trailed in the first two games. In game three the Ospreys scored the first point on an Emily Kohler service ace and went on to extend the lead to 13-7. FAU battled back to 14-13 but the Osprey's .239 hitting percentage in the game was too much for FAU to overcome.
The game served as a wakeup call for the Owls as they started game four on a 6-0 run behind the serving of Krista Klawitter (Bowmanville, Ontario) which included two service aces. The Ospreys would pull to within 28-27 but a kill by Kelly Paiva (Minas Gerais, Brazil) and a quick set to Petry (Trumansburg, NY) in the middle closed out the match. Petry was followed by 19 kills from Paiva and 14 from Katie Arvidson (Franklin, TN)
Right-side hitter Emily Kohler led UNF (8-8) with 13 kills and completed the double-double with 16 digs.
The Owls held UNF's offense in check with 83 digs and 10 blocks. Makra Condill finished with a match-high 23 digs and Paiva added 22. Paiva also finished with five blocks to tie Petry's match-high.
In their first season in the Atlantic Sun Conference, UNF will face FAU twice this year with the conference counter on October 27 in Jacksonville.
FAU's next match will count in A-Sun play. The Owls travel to Stetson University on Saturday.
