Dear FAU Supporter,
FAU boasts a two-time winner in three weeks for the Sun Belt conference swimmer of the week competition! Although she was born in Texas and started swimming in the British Virgin Islands, she's right here right now, making a name for herself in Boca Raton, Florida.
Just nineteen years old, Jeni Burts is on her way to a lifetime of swimming achievements as she overshadows the competition with her hard work, her dedication, and her commitment to be the best!
She started swimming in elementary school, and she hasn't looked back since. Although her family lives in Florida now, she obviously gained experience growing up as she spent time in the St. Thomas and St. Croix. However, when looking at many schools to attend for college on an out-of-state recruiting trip, her mind and heart kept coming back to her hometown.
FAU ranks high among schools across the country in academics, athletics, and the faculty's commitment to excellence. Jeni noticed this and wanted to stay near home in a "...positive atmosphere...where the swim team had a lot of potential, and I thought I would be a good addition." Certainly her coaches felt like she was as they awarded her the "Hardest Working Freshman" honor last year.
Giving a lot of credit to her coaches and to the rest of her team, she was reluctant to brag about her big victory at the Georgia Tech Invitational. Finishing in the top 10 overall and making the finals in four events was a big accomplishment for this sophomore! However, herbig win came when she trampled all the rest to win the 400 IM! The competition was fierce as she defeated some much bigger schools, such as University of Florida and Tennessee! Way to go Jeni!
She likes to train with the boys swim team at FAU, so she can push herself even harder because... "They do not want a girl to beat them!" All of her perseverance is paying off, and it looks like she's has a couple more years to hone her skills further. We're sure to hear more from this young lady as she continues to work towards dominance on and off the field.
