BOCA RATON, FL - Fresh off helping her team to a third consecutive tournament championship, Florida Atlantic University's Jessica Sachs has been named Atlantic Sun Conference Player-of-the-Week, announced the conference office Monday afternoon. Sachs, a sophomore, batted .579 for the week as the Owls won the FAU "Parents' Weekend" Tournament, held Friday through Sunday, at FAU Field.
In five games, Sachs had 11 hits in 19 at bats. Her efforts included a grand slam in a 5-4 win against Oklahoma State on Friday. She also had what turned out to be the game-winning single against FIU on Friday that drove in two runs in the sixth inning. At one point during the tournament, Sachs went 10-for-11. She drove in a total of six runs and scored four times while being named tournament MVP.
Sachs is currently second on the team with a .315 batting average. She leads the Owls with 41 hits and is tied for second in homers and third in RBIs.
FAU (31-11) has won a season-high seven straight games and is 16-2 in March. The Owls are also receiving votes in the latest USA Today/NFCA Top-25. FAU defeated FIU, 3-1, Sunday to win its third straight tournament.
Florida Atlantic now sets its sights on beginning defense of its record seven straight A-Sun titles. Twenty of the team's final 22 regular season games will be against A-Sun competition. FAU begins its conference slate Friday and Saturday in Nashville with doubleheaders against Belmont and Lipscomb, respectively.
