BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University is gearing up for the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament this Thursday through Saturday in Nashville, TN. The Owls are the no. 8 seed and face no. 1 Troy State University Thursday afternoon at 1:00pm EST. All of FAU's games at the A-Sun Tournament will be carried on WLVJ 1040-AM and www.fausports.com.
FAU finished the regular season 9-18 and 6-14 in the A-Sun. Troy State, this year's A-Sun regular season champion and the defending A-Sun champion, comes into the tournament 22-5 overall. The Trojans finished the A-Sun 18-2 and won their final 11 games. Their only losses came against Georgia State and UCF.
During the regular season, FAU was swept by the Trojans. TSU took a 93-81 victory January 25 at home before coming from behind to defeat the Owls, 73-68, on February 2 in Boca Raton.
FAU's Mike Bell was named Second-Team All-Conference after leading FAU with 18.4 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. Those numbers were good for second and first, respectively, in the A-Sun. Bell has already posted 11 double-doubles and is also second in the A-Sun with 2.1 blocks per game.
Earnest Crumbley enters the tournament as FAU's hottest player. The senior, who owns several FAU records, has led the team the past seven games with 19.0ppg. Crumbley was named A-Sun Player-of-the-Week on Monday after scoring a school-record 39 points to go along with a record 11 three-pointers in FAU's 95-80 win over Campbell on February 26.
Another post-season honor for the Owls was handed to Jimmy Bishop. The junior was named to the A-Sun's All-Academic Team. Bishop is averaging 4.7 points and 2.0 rebounds per game.
TSU sports two players who received First-Team All-Conference honors in Greg Davis and Rob Lewin. Davis also was named A-Sun Player-of-the-Year. Lewin leads the Trojans with 15.8ppg while Davis averages 15.4 points and 8.8 assists per game.
TSU leads the A-Sun in scoring with 86.6ppg while FAU is second with 76.9. The Trojans lead the all-time series 12-2. This will be the first time the teams have met in the A-Sun Tournament. FAU's all-time record in the tournament is 5-2.
Semifinal action takes place on Friday. Should FAU defeat Trou State, it will face the winner of the Georgia State/Stetson game Friday night at 7:00pm ET. Saturday's championship game tips at 4:00pm ET and will be televised on ESPN2. The tournament is being hosted by Belmont University at the Curb Event Center.
